Floor Drain & Basement Drain Maintenance

Serving Brantford, Niagara, Hamilton, Thorold, Welland and Woodstock. The basement floor drain is the lowest point in the home's drainage system. It backs up first when the main line clogs.

Why the basement floor drain matters most

Because it sits at the lowest point in the whole system, a basement floor drain is often the first place a main-line backup shows up, before it's visible anywhere else in the house. A floor drain that gurgles, drains slowly, or backs up water is frequently an early warning of a problem further down the line, not an isolated issue with the drain itself.

Trap seal and routine maintenance

A floor drain relies on water sitting in its trap to block sewer gas from coming up into the basement. If that trap dries out (common in drains that rarely get used) you'll notice a sewer smell with no visible clog at all. Routine maintenance keeps the trap primed and the line clear before it becomes a bigger problem.

When it's a repair, not just a clearing

Some basement drain issues go beyond clearing a clog: a damaged section of pipe under the slab needs to be broken into, replaced, and the concrete restored properly. That's a bigger job than routine maintenance, but it's the right call when the drain itself, not just debris inside it, is the problem.

Common questions

Why does my basement smell like sewer gas even though the drain isn't clogged?

Almost always a dried-out trap seal, common in drains that don't get regular water flow. Pouring a bit of water down it periodically prevents this, and we can service it if it's already happened.

Is a basement floor drain backup an emergency?

If it's actively backing up water, yes, it usually means the main line is blocked somewhere downstream, and left alone it can mean sewage in your basement.

Basement drain gurgling, smelling, or backing up? Worth checking before it gets worse.
